review 1: This was my first Willig book as a stand-alone. I have loved her Pink Carnation series and was interested to see how the stand alone would do. I like that she framed the story in the same way she does her other books with the two different plots in the different time periods. In That Summer, Julia is a woman who is stuck in life. When she inherits a house in England, this might be a chance for her to really find out what happened to her mother along with some other family secrets. While having to deal with fortune-hunting estranged family and the handsome art dealer Nick, Julia is in for a very eye-opening summer.
review 2: All the fun of the Pink Carnation series, none of the super-drawn-out-ness. I could get behind that. Also, it was very exciting to mov
... moree into my preferred historical period and see some Pre-Raphaelites. Charming, clever - the usual things one says about a romance novel - and I think Willig did a particularly good job here with the characters and the implicit romance of finding oneself (not with a guy, although occasionally because of one) that has become such an important part of contemporary romance. It's an interesting trend and one that I can only applaud. less
