review 2: This story represents an interesting and, in my experience, original take on the self-help book. The author, instead of employing the usual `text-book but chatty I'm your friend' approach couches his message(s) in the form of a novel about a man, almost literally, `at the end of his tether'. At the far extent of a metal girder high above the ground, he's about to end it all by leaping from one of the highest points on the Eiffel Tower, when suddenly he's aware of being observed by someone who appears to have come from nowhere. The man urges him to carry on in a kind of `don't mind me' way and, just as suddenly, his courage apparently deserts him and he eventually inches his way back to safety. But not before they have entered into, what appears to be a bizarre contract: the stranger agrees to turn the poor wretch's life around if he agrees in turn to forfeit it if he reneges on the agreement. Thus we have a kind of Faustian plot hatched to carry the authors' message(s).And it proves to be a neat trick: the story is compelling and one I devoured in two days. Essentially, it illustrates some (albeit, very few) of the principles of NLP in way that hooks the reader in and keeps him or her engaged till the last few pages reveal the `twist'. I must say I guessed it a little in advance but this in no way spoiled the whole reading experience. In fact it probably reads better if you know nothing about NLP at the start but don't be put off if you do or even if you're a skeptic. At only one point did I find the device slightly, `clunky'? Otherwise, it was extremely well written, interesting, engaging, educational and informative: what more could a reader possibly ask! less
