review 1: I really wanted to like this book - the blurb is so PROMISING! - and that I didn't was quite a disappointment for me. I liked the worldbuilding. Wolfboy was interesting - I want to know more about him and his condition, and the book only gave me little crumbs. I thought Wildgirl was... OK, although the Horrible Thing That Happened to her really was not that bad. The writing is really good. The pacing and plot... just no. It starts off like the blurb promised, with Wolfboy and Wildgirl exploring Shyness. If it had continued like that, with weird meetings and then worked the Wolfboy/Ortolan/Gram angle, I think I would have liked it more. We could have had more information on Wolfboy, learned what Lupi said to Wildgirl, seen how the night affected Wildgirl and her problems.In... morestead they go on a ridiculous quest to get Wolfboy's lighter back from the sugar-high Kidds. I get that the lighter had some sentimental value to Wolfboy, but he was ready to shrug it off. Wildgirl's stubborn insistence that they get it back just lacked any kind of foundation, and the quest bored me to tears BECAUSE IT WAS COMPLETELY UNNECCESSARY, even if it was tied to the Dr. Gregory side-story by the thinnest of thin plot-threads. As the second half of the book is dedicated to the Lighter Quest, it ruined it for me.
review 2: I was provided with a review copy of this novel by Edelweiss. I had hoped this book would be a good choice for my lower-level reading students in my high school classroom for SSR, due to its short link and dystopian quality. I enjoy dystopian novels, especially series, but writers must be strong world builders in order to truly place the reader in the setting, and this novel just doesn't have enough for me. The lack of world building and back story was a major fault in my reading of the book. I understand that the Darkness is supposed to make the characters (and readers) uncertain and unsafe in the novel, but not enough information was given about this event and place to help me understand what was going on. (The Darkness just appearing one day and only in the locale of Shyness' borders was not detailed enough for me). And going on a dangerous mission across town for the loss of a lighter was odd for me. I was unsure of what time period the story is supposed to take place - post-apocolyptic or present day? I had problems understanding the geographical setting of the story. Including a map (such as the one Blake draws for Wildgirl and Wolfboy before their odyssey into Orphanville) would be helpful in mapping out the novel for some readers who are directionally-challenged. Also, is Wolfboy supposed to be a werewolf of some sort, given that he lives primarily in the dark and occasionally howls? Is the Darkness supposed to be ominous to the rest of the country and/or world? Where the Kidds hyped up on sugar and Dr. Gregory's self-help seminars supposed to be a commentary on modern health crises? I was left with many questions which are unresolved and left me frustrated as a reader. Perhaps this book is just not for me. less

Officially one the best YA books I've read in the last five years. Just beautiful in every way.

I tried to read this, but couldn't get involved. It did not sustain my interest for very long.

Quirky, different, unexpected...not your regular beginning, middle and end story.
