review 1: David can't deny his attraction to other guys, which might not be a problem if his secret lover/track teammate didn't imbue every sexual encounter with shame and aloofness. His former best friend is no help, being too "out" for his own good and his girlfriend makes thing more complicated when she offers to let David test out his sexual uncertainty with her. While not particularly original, this coming out story might be comforting to high school students grappling with the same questions as David.
review 2: This book had potential I feel, but it missed out being better than it was. The first half was so weak. The characters, David especially, unfortunately, were really weak. I couldn't connect to his story. For once, I think this is a story that would have be... morenefited from a more complex background for all the characters. I'm glad the story progressed so quickly, but I don't think it was worth the sacrifice in quality. But right around page 120 things got better. David's dilemma was more convincing, I felt a better connection to the story, and there was actually feeling behind the dialogue. It stopped feeling so staged. Overall, I have two conflicting opinions about this story. On one hand, the vagueness lends the possibility that David could be any guy going through this, which means that anyone could potentially relate. On the other hand, the whole thing felt very canned. While in the depths of the story the author did a good job of avoiding stereotypes, using "My Beautiful Laundrette" felt like such a cheap escape. References like that are good, but it felt out of nowhere and forced in this particular story. less
