review 1: Fascinating picture of Sandlin's kin who had neither the ability to articulate nor the urge to reflect on the meaning of their existence. They simply plod on, taking the blows of life in their stride with whatever small amounts of satisfaction and pleasure they can roust. It is compassionate and tender--and a good way to get the reader thinking about acquaintances who seem mysteriously private--in its depiction of the author's kin about whom he knew very little until embarking on this work.
review 2: Lee Sandlin's story draws you in right from the prologue and keeps you entertained to the very end. It is a story about a families' history and the trials and tribulations they go through from the 1850's until the present time. It will make you wonder about your ow... moren family and what similarities you might find. All in all, it's a very well written book and highly recommended. I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads. less
