review 1: 3 1/2 STARS (rounded up because I admire the author for sharing her story)For the first half, I could not put this book down. Not because I enjoyed what I was reading, but because I could not believe what I was reading. That horrible, horrible excuse for a mother. I wanted so badly for someone to stand up for Tuesday, especially her father. And what in the world were her brothers thinking as they witnessed the abuse? This is a question that was never really answered. As the book went on, I found myself becoming angry that she didn't tell someone (with the exception of one friend) and that the mother's unforgivable behavior was explained away as a result of her brain injury. And not one teacher found Tuesday's physical condition suspicious? As a teacher, it drove me nuts! T... morehe book is well written, flowing seamlessly from chapter to chapter, but I could not get over the way Tuesday kept pining for things to go back to the way they were before the abuse began. It became extremely frustrating. I am on the fence as to whether I want to read the sequel, Call Me Cockroach. If you enjoy heart-breaking memoirs or true crime, you will likely enjoy this book.
review 2: I read this and felt bad for Tuesday. I'm always reminded of situations such as this that my cousin went through these things. She survived as it seems Tuesday did. Why did her mother treat her this way? Why didn't her father send her away earlier? What makes Tuesday not bring up her past with her mother? What makes a child seem to forgive their parent? Since I've never been through it I don't know. It was an interesting story. less
