Hello Dolly! won four Tony’s in 2017 for Best Revival of Musical, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical – Better Midler, Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical – Gavin Creel, and Best Costume Design. My mother and I were lucky enough to see Hello Dolly! on Saturday December 2nd at 8PM at the Shubert Theatre. We had to sit separate since there were only a select few seats left, but we didn’t mind.
From the opening scene to the closing number, Hello Dolly! was vibrant, loud, fun, and entertaining. The second Better Midler appeared on stage everyone in the audience stood up to give her an standing ovation. The audience would later give her and the cast a standing ovation after the popular number, Hello Dolly! Out of all the shows I have seen on Broadway, that audience was the loudest as it was very clear everyone loved Bette Midler. I couldn’t help myself either, Bette Midler clearly deserved the Tony win in my opinion.
David Hyde Pierce was excellent as Horace Vandergelder, as he had perfect chemistry with Midler and the rest of the cast. Pierce and Midler definitely shined and made the audience laugh and smile. The rest of the ensemble was talented and entertaining. Hello Dolly! is set in 1890’s in New York City, as the bold widow Dolly Levi (Midler) becomes a matchmaker. Dolly schemes Horace’s employees, to fall in love and ultimately convince Horace, she should be his wife.
Some of the favorite moments from the show were the musical numbers, It Takes a Woman, Put on Your Sunday Clothes, Elegance, and of course the show stopping number, Hello Dolly! The costumes and sets were colorful and bought the characters, stores, and city to life. I can’t get the lyrics to Put on Your Sunday Clothes out of my head.
Put on your Sunday clothes, there’s lots of world out there Get out the brillantine and dime cigars We’re gonna find adventure in the evening air Girls in white In a perfumed night Where the lights are bright as the stars! Put on your Sunday clothes, we’re gonna ride through town In one of those new horsedrawn open carsOverall, Hello Dolly! is a perfect show to see on Broadway. It’s fun, vibrant, entertaining, and is a classic old fashion musical. Book your flight to NYC now, you don’t want to miss this revival. Hello Dolly! Advertisements Share this:
