review 1: “The Language of Souls” is a beautiful account of cross cultural relationships and a nice take on the hero’s journey. This concise novella is immediately readable. The community in which protagonist Solena lives is descriptively introduced, supplementary characters are well-crafted and believable and Solena surfaces as a young woman worthy of having her story told. The reader is soon guided further into Solena’s universe as her feisty personality is explored, her motivation revealed and the path she believes must be taken unfolds. When Solena’s pilgrimage becomes entwined with Rundan’s, the point of view is shared by the two characters. I thought this was done well and found it easy to ascertain whether it was Solena’s or Rundan’s perspective that was been t... moreold. The shared POV approach became really valuable in identifying what emotions and thought patterns these two key characters were experiencing. It’s hard not to like Solena. With the exception of Rundan’s psychotic warmongering father, it’s hard to dislike ANYONE in this story. Everyone is so accomplished and / or nice. I quite like books where a dark flaw needs to be addressed and possibly conquered, but I recognise this isn’t really viable with a book that has less than 72 pages. It was actually refreshing to me to read something where all the loose ends are tied up smoothly in a short period of time. I seldom seem able to find books that don’t have sequels or aren’t part of a long term series, so, as much as I enjoyed Solena and her travels, I was happy to see her predictable, but still rather lovely conclusion reached in record time.
review 2: Once again Ms. Goldfinch creates a beautiful fantasy world with magic that centers on individuals natural talents/inclinations and emotions.Although the story of Solena and Rundan is brief in length, it speaks volumes of the language of love and compassion that can bridge the gap between different cultures and beliefs, allowing for the good in human nature to rule actions.Another delightful read! less
