review 1: This was a fun little book. It's a list of items, people, and ideas who either aren't around anymore or who are fading fast and why they are were/are so wonderful. Of course, I didn't agree with every single thing the author loves, but I found I agreed with most. We share of love of brooches and spectacles and the phrase "the cat's meow," just to name a few. This book felt like a fun little ditty, effervescent as champagne but never too silly or sweet.
review 2: This was charming, gratuitous, occasionally naughty, and clever. I am debating cultivating an idea or two from it for the new year... maybe adopting Florida water on occasion, or evening strolls... One slight embarrassment for me was i had no idea many of the phrases bandied about in my house are ... moreon vocabulary extinction listings. We've always said 'bees knees' 'gung ho' and 'hi-jinks', not every day but they are regularly used descriptive phrases in my family. Might be a Midwestern thing. Everyone in my family also still uses hankies. Regularly. But they are getting harder to find. (and my mom still does pin curls... so darn cute on her!) less
