review 1: From the very first lines of this book I knew I was going to love it. The novel tells the story of Ava Lavender, a girl with wings. But before we get to Ava, we get the stories of each of her ancestors starting with her great grandfather who emigrated to America from France. Each character has an interesting story and the whole novel, which is characterized by magical realism, is enchanting and strange in the ways of Alice Hoffman or Joanne Harris' Chocolat.
review 2: I love the goodreads book awards because I get to find a "prepared" list of books. This was not a disappointing book and I can see why it was rated high. I like Walton's style and I loved all of the characters. Besides the small amounts of fantasy, the story felt true in the sense that we all d... moreo dumb things because of love. Yes, one might expect it to be a story about Ava only, but I actually liked that it was about three generations of women. I love reading well threaded stories like this one. Of course, the fantasy addition just made it better for me. less
