review 1: Few books grip my attention from the very first page, but this book certainly did.Slavefic and me are like oil and water, but there's something about this book that kept me in its grip for the couple hours it took to read it from start to finish. William isn't a typical Master, he honestly cares for his slave/s, and has a tenderness he shows to both Harte and Ellis when other Masters might be cruel and abusive to their own slaves.Halfway through is where it gets a bit iffy for me. I just had a problem with Ellis's passive-aggressive personality and as much as I wanted to feel some sympathy for him, I just couldn't muster any energy to do so. I wasn't a big fan of the mentality he has that he's not good enough and of his attempts to push William and Harte away, when it's th... moree opposite he wants. It's bittersweet that a hard separation filled with abuse is what it takes for Ellis (and to some extent, William) to realize what, or who, he wants. I found that Harte is the only one true to himself. It was agony to keep reading after Ellis leaves, but the last 10-20% of the book more than made up for all the angst this book put me through. I was in rapture by the time the epilogue came rolling in.
review 2: At His Throat is a perfect title for this book as it grabs you by the throat at the beginning and does not let go. In this world the only way to become a “professional” (i.e. doctor, lawyer) you need to be apprenticed by being a slave. The system has become so corrupt that many slaves are treated horribly, yet a master and slave loving each other can get them separated. The main character is Ellis a young man (the slaves are very young in this book – I had to look beyond that as it was rather disturbing) whose master has died and has one week to find a new master or he will be sent to the facility. The facility is a place full of abuse and neglect and no slave wants to end up there. In his quest to find a new master, Ellis meets Master William and his slave, Harte. William is a lawyer who is not terribly comfortable in his role as Master, but it is apparent very quickly that he cares greatly for Harte. Harte is a bundle of love and energy, which is kind of amazing when you learn his back story. This story yanks you back and forth again and again. Just when you start to relax and think everything is going to be okay now, something else happens. There is some serious angst, but I was so sucked in I couldn’t put it down. For the last third of the book and I had to fight not to go and read the epilogue because I was dying to know it was going to all turn out the way I wanted it to. less
