review 1: I expected this book to be much more than it was. It reads like a chronology of manned space missions. There is very little discussion of the wive's feelings, nor is there any real emotion expressed. The entire book was very superficial. Koppel may have been able to delve deeper into individual wives if she had limited herself to fewer flights, instead of trying to tell the story of Mercury, Gemini and Apollo. review 2: Captivating. If you've read "The Right Stuff" or watched "Apollo 13" this book gives insight into the individual and collective experiences of the women married to the first American astronauts. Even though this is a true story, at times it read like fiction. These women were at the forefront of the US Space Race. The traditional norms d... moreictated by NASA ended up being challenged by larger societal changes. less
