review 1: I listened to the book,which sometimes is not as good as reading it. This was the case in this book. The narrator was whiny, the characters were all arrogant. Lots of reference to Shakespeare was woven into the story. The gist is that an author is writing a biography of a famous director. He is killed in an auto crash and his colleague, an agoraphobic mousy young woman takes over on the project. Moves very slowly, has little to say, so to quote Shakespeare, this was much ado about nothing.

In spite of intermittent panic attacks resulting from a childhood spent in abusive foster families, Em perseveres to untangle the mysterious elements of Malcolm story, often putting herself in as much harm's way as Sara Paretsky's reckless female sleuth. The ending is too cynical to be satisfying to me. Although I have loved all the Carlotta mysteries by Linda Barnes, I will think twice about reading another novel with a new protagonist. less
