review 1: This series is fast paced and full of humor, but the underlying concepts are real Celtic myths about fairies, and not the cute little ones with wings. I highly recommend these for middle grade readers (and I like them too, even though I'm a bit older than that :-).As is often the case, I read this book because I know Linda. Our first week at Clarion West, Octavia Butler pronounced her first short story - the short story she'd written before we arrived at the workshop - good enough to sell. Her writing has only improved since.
review 2: I didn't expect to like this book much, since I'm not really into this type of book. But, I guess I was dead -on wrong. This is one of the best middle grade books I've read in a long time. What delighted me most was how this boo
... morek tapped into the kind of girl I truly am-someone who could be stubborn and determined to get her way, but who also cared deeply about others. She isn't perfect, so she's really easy to relate to. It really shows that even heroes can't do everything by themselves. In this book, the adults weren't the most active participants. However, the tendency of pre-teens to overlook the kids whom they once were plays out in how Cat underestimates what's going on with her little sister Sookie. Even though this book deals with fantasy and magic, it is extreamly realistic. I was hooked from the start of the argument between Cat and Clive over soccer. I love how Ms. Dreeble came to the rescue and her reciting the names of the unknown women scientists to the same boy who insisted on the superiority of men in sports and science. I cheered when Skeeter stood up to his snotty older brother and preferred being Sookie's magic act assistant. I love how boy characters are often helpers in the Grim Hill books. The twists and turns in the plot made it very unexpected and a fun read. It starts off like any other middle grade fantasy, but then when the suspense taps in, you feel yourself getting pulled in by it. And I have to admit, I liked Clive a lot better in the end. Conclusion: A book I wish I picked up a lot earlier. less
