review 1: I have to put this book on the OK list but it isn't great by any means. Jolene Asdale owns and operates a car dealership. She is separated from the town's police deputy. A body is found inside one of her display Ferraris and it is the body of a man she was casually dating. Some of her neighbors have told the police that she and the victim were seen arguing before his murder so she is on the top of the suspect list. The book deals with her relationship with Ray, her estranged husband, and her sister, Erica, who is a mental patient in the local psych center. When Erica and her "boyfriend" escape and steal a car from Jolene and then she finds money hidden her house, things get out of hand. I like a mystery where the main character is fighting for her convictions and fin... moreding out what happened, but Jolene is just a mess. She spends most of her time pining over her relationship with Ray which is irritating, and hiding any evidence that might point to Erica. It had its good points but I don't think I will read any more of these.
review 2: I'm in the process of reading this first cozy mystery by Lisa Bork and am really enjoying it. I don't read that many cozies, but they are often a welcome change from some of the darker crime fiction and this one doesn't disappoint. The story centers around nearly-divorced Jolene Asdale who runs a high-end car sales company. While showing a customer one of her models, a dead man is found inside the car, obviously stabbed. Not only was the murder victim found on the premises, but she knew and dated him for awhile. These factors unfortunately involve Jolene more than she cares to be. Add in her nearly ex-husband Ray Parker who is the deputy assigned to the case and her sister Erica, a psychiatric patient who's gone missing, and Jolene is close to a meltdown.I like Jolene alot - and while she is an engaging and sympathetic character, she's not a saint and struggles with the same problems, character flaws and tribulations that most of us do in real life. Her strong feelings for Ray coupled with the problems that drove them apart make for an interesting complication that you want to learn more about. Lisa Bork is a refreshing and welcome addition to the genre and I plan to read all the entries in the Broken Vow series. less
