review 1: I enjoyed being back with the Wallflowers, although this novel isn't as good as the books in the main series. There's a lot of summary, and telling rather than showing. I was skeptical of the book at the beginning, but by the end found it a nice cozy Christmas read.However...I detest romances that write sexy harassment scenes. Rafe sexually assaults Hannah in the beginning. She is very clearly telling him no, trying to push him away, and he passionately kisses her anyway. This isn't sexy; it's assault. Come on, ladies!
review 2: Historical romance is so tricky, to walk the fine line between historically accurate portrayals of sexuality and modern notions of female empowerment. In the past week I've read nine other books by Lisa Kleypas where she walks the line ... moreperfectly, producing delightful, entertaining reads. In this book she stumbled, badly.The heroine was tedious. She was possibly too historically accurate and her lack of initiative and daring made her dull and irritating.My real problem, though, was the hero, who was essentially an asshole and a vaguely rape-y one at that. On page 26 he actually says, "This is how we court girls in America. We grab them and kiss them. And if they don't like it, we do it again, harder and longer, until they surrender." That's rape. Or at the very least, sexual assault.I was pleased to see all the Wallflowers again and, of course, in the end everyone is very sweet and romantic, but for at least two thirds of the book I was solidly uncomfortable with the developing relationship. Rather disappointing after the real delight I found in the rest of the series and the Hathaways. less
