review 1: I found this to be a mixed bag. The premise was cool and some of what was covered was enjoyable, but overall it just seemed a little bland. I wasn't upset by what it offered and found it enjoyable enough to keep reading, but it was a lot of mindless cloak and dagger without clear direction.Soooo... the preppy private school has secrets, and those keeping the secret-keepers do well to keep them secret? I understand that concept, and that's basically all that was driven home. It's fairly cliche and you don't need to be a pop culture genius to understand what was presented.I'm not hating on it. I did find it to be a fun read at times with a "Veronica Mars" like vibe, but Kate didn't have the charisma or snark needed to truly live up to that title. I didn't connect with her th... moreat well despite the first person narrative, and the way she acted didn't let me get in her head, because she didn't really have any clever ideas. She simply did one thing, got a clue, got another email, did another thing, and got another clue. The other characters surrounding her weren't anything insanely brilliant either. I'd say Seth stood out the most since that's a real personality. I know a Seth. I think many people do. I have no idea what Liam was supposed to be. Who else? Oh, Kate's parents. Not just did they seem one-dimensional, but they managed to annoy me every time they spoke. Taylor? Bethany? Maddie? The way the supporting cast were portrayed didn't strike me as real enough. I guess, to me, they felt a little hollow. Roecker tried to breathe some life into them in the end, but it felt too late. The mystery itself wasn't groundbreaking, and the way it was handled just felt sort of simplistic. All her clues came from those emails with the cryptic riddles (and the way they were solved was a little "after school special", if I'm being honest) and Kate herself had determination but with little in her favour. She didn't really seem to do anything interesting... "oh, the school library isn't helping... let me check the public library!" ...really?The romance angle fell flat. It didn't need to be here at all, but then again it's a young adult book with a female lead, so of course it has a romantic subplot. I just thought it seemed tacked on, and didn't sense any real connection between Liam and Kate. Finally there's the ending. It was annoying. It screamed of "I will not give up! I will take them down" as if it were the ending to a superhero movie.Despite my criticisms, I didn't mind the book, but it also didn't impress me. So I'm not disappointed, but I'm also not impressed. I'm 50/50 about continuing on in this series. We'll see. 7/10
review 2: When Kate Lowry's dead best friend, Grace, emails her, it's up to Kate to unleash the mystery of what really happened to Grace on the day of her death. But Kate later finds out that this mystery is a lot different than she had thought. She finds herself unable to trust everybody she thought she could trust. But are ghosts really real?"The Liars Society" by Lisa Roecker and Laura Roecker, was an enjoyable book. It always made me want to read more and always had me guessing what will happen next. I think the authors did a great job writing this book and included a great amount of detail. I rated this book a four out of five stars. I would mostly recommend this book to girls who love to read about mysteries. This book was a lot different compared to the other books I've read, however I really enjoyed reading this book. less
