review 1: The five-star rating comes with a small caveat: this book is amazing ... as long as you are enthusiastic about cheese and interested in learning more about the different kinds of cheese being made in the United States. If you are a snob about cheese and are convinced that only the French can make a triple cream brie and only grate imported Parmigiano-Reggiano over your pasta, then either move along or be prepared to have your eyes opened and your horizons broadened.I don't speak cheese any better than I speak wine, so a lot of the tasting language is lost on me, but it doesn't make me any less interested in experiencing the broad spectrum of flavors available. Not only am I even more inspired to make my own cheese -- beyond ricotta and mozzarella -- but I also want to go o... moren a nationwide cheese tour (or at least spend a significant amount of time in Vermont, Wisconsin and California tasting cheese).
review 2: The most delightful book about cheese and people who make cheese that I've ever read (and I've read quite a few). I couldn't put it down, and I dreamed about cheese after reading it. One caveat: probably more interesting to people with access to Murray's, as much of the book reads like an incredible cheese shopping list. But Thorpe's journey from the basement of Eli's to the top of Murray's is a captivating read with a few laugh-out-loud moments. I wonder if she'd grant a former strategist, current stay-at-home-mother an "informational interview"... less

Great writer, but I wish she included more factual information about cheese in general.
