review 1: I enjoyed this book despite myself. I was immediately sucked in by Katie's secret and the author keeps you guessing and guessing until it's almost maddening. The pace of the book is very good and the payoff is worth the wait. Katie is a well-developed character and I ended up liking her a lot. She has a lot of strength and her pain is relatable. Lucas, on the other hand, is the Manic Pixie Dream Girl equivalent for guys. He's perfect in every way. TOO perfect. I have a hard time believing that any teenage boy would react as well to Katie's secret, her need and her pain. Most teenagers, maybe all teenagers, are not equipped to handle that kind of situation. Anyway, I just accepted Lucas as a bit of a fantasy character in a book about a romantic fantasy. But I give this book... more four stars for pure reading pleasure. I could not stop reading it until I figured out Katie's secret and the inevitable climax (romantic and not).
review 2: Where to begin, I’m totally torn how to rate this book. On one hand it is well written; her fear that Brandon has found her, her guilt stopping her from being friends with Mariella because her child is the same age as Tommy was palpable but there my sympathy for the character ends. I liked her at the start but I just cannot see past the horror of a thirteen year old saying to another thirteen year old about murdering a child and going on to describe how she would do it just because she was mad at the child and then shirk an responsibility of the event because she wasn’t the one that actually did the act. Surely no normal child would describe in such detail about killing someone? That aspect of this fictional story just left too much distaste in my mouth to see past that and to the otherwise sweet love story of her and Lucas. I applaud that the author was not being afraid to approach this subject from such a controversial viewpoint but it did not work for me as I could not feel anything for what Katie had been through mentally. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. less
