review 1: a series of short stories that I was required to read in a reading prose class. The stories are quite wry, and Ostlund loves to set her stories either in Malaysia or Minnesota, where she is from. She also focuses on lesbian relationships and very rarely are there heterosexual relationships in her stories. The children characters often are more mature than the adult characters, and every story brings a lighthearted sense of humor to a dark story.
review 2: Some of the stories in this book captured my attention. Ms. Ostlund writes beautifully and presents interesting details that make her characters unique and sometimes puzzling. Eventually I simply felt alienated as I read further, as though I weren't intelligent enough or worldly enough to appreciate them. Rath
... moreer than encouraging me to delight in exposure to new experiences and places, these stories left me feeling insecure and inadequate; I just wanted to go home and hide. less
