review 1: I picked this up at the library, because Louis Sachar. Holes. I didn't even look at the title or cover. When I sat down to read it, and realized it features bridge, I was more than a little surprised. My husband went through a pretty intense bridge playing phase 2-5 years ago, and at 40, he was by far the youngest guy around. So a YA novel about bridge? Weird. But hey, Louis Sachar. Holes. The guy can take weird and make it wonderful. I am grateful for the bit of bridge I learned when Jon was playing regularly, although I took full advantage of the permission we were given to skim over the "whale" sections. Alton, Toni, and Trapp were all wonderful. Alton's mom sucks, his sister rocks, and he needs a new best friend. The housekeeper and nurse reminded me more of ... morewhen you see a movie based on a book, and minor characters are still there because they are needed in one or two scenes, but most of their role is cut, so if you hadn't read the book, you'd be wondering who they are. I kept being surprised when they'd pop up. Bridge and magical realism in one book. Huh.
review 2: I'm not sure I understand Bridge anymore than I did before I read The Cardturner, but I still appreciate the story the book tells and the small insight it did give me into the world of Bridge.Overall, I enjoyed the story (even if the unexpected supernatural twist at the end gave me a pause) and found Alton an easy narrator to sympathize with and follow through the book.Plus, I've got to give Louis Sachar props for writing a young adult novel about bridge. It works well even if you don't understand bridge and if it makes you interested in the process, than bravo. less
