review 1: It's difficult for me to decide what rating to give this book. Because it was good, I want people to read it. But the end lost me a bit.So let's break it down:This book is about bridge. I knew nothing about bridge, and I still don't know much. This isn't Sachar's fault, as I think he does a good job explaining and is considerate of his reader's patience (the whale thing is cute...you'll understand when you read). But bridge is way damn complicated, is what I took away. The characters are great. I loved Alton and his sense of humor. Toni is wonderful and I wish more time could have been spent getting to know her, and seeing her relationships play out. Lester is cantankerous, but hits the right level of human. Leslie is adorable. Gloria, Lucy, and Arnold are support... moreing characters. Alton's mom is weird, but kind of in a good way. Cliff though...that dude is no true friend. (Pro-tip, Alton...if your best friend takes two of your girls, then he ain't your best friend. I wish we could've seen Alton stand up to him about this.)It actually surprised me, how early Lester died. I mean, we all knew it was going to happen, but I wasn't expecting it so soon. But it did set up the ending of the book, and prodded Alton into becoming his own player, and his own person. So the plot is decently paced as well. It's just...the part of the climax and ending, where they're hearing the voices of the dead Lester and Annabel? It's weird and over-the-top. Sachar didn't have to go so hard for us the readers to understand that Alton and Toni are finishing what Lester and Annabel started. It turned a good book into a decent book for me, honestly. But overall, I would recommend it. Even if you're like me and know nothing about bridge, the characters are warm and full of personality so they'll suck you right in.
review 2: If this wasn't a Louis Sachar book, the author's note would have put me off this book. But since it WAS Louis Sachar, I stuck with it and was somewhat rewarded. He's right in his author's note, the bridge aspect really did throw me for a loop. I found that part very boring because I didn't understand it, so I skipped around looking for some actual story. Bridge people would most likely LOVE this book, but for me, it wasn't so great. Also, the ending was abrupt and some things were not explained. I found myself very surprised by the turn of events halfway through the book, though. Didn't see it coming at all. less

Almost made me wish I had enough brain cells left to learn how to play bridge...
