review 1: These goddamn serials, always reeling me in and hooking me. Geez! I stopped reading Fanfiction because I was tired of waiting for updates, not that I didn't love reading Fanfiction, which is essentially what a serial is modeled after, but the wait killed me more often than not. I would lose interest if a story wasn't updated or I would forget the key elements that really drew me into the story. The same goes for serials: I don't like to wait, but the suckers keep getting me all excited for the next books and I can't fault authors for creating a strong want in their readers. But man, it pisses me off that I got lured into these books. Not that the books are bad, in fact A Week in New York and Autumn in London are very good books, I just hate the constant wanting. Okay, th... moreat's my love/hate with serials. But not my love/hate for these two books by Louise Bay, quite the contrary. I found the story of Anna Kirby, a feisty Londenner and Ethan West, a womanizing New York playboy to be very intriguing and most importantly entertaining to read. We have read these types of stories before: Rich hot dude falls for quirky girl. He has issues, she has issues, blah, blah, blah. But what Bay does with her characters is kept things in the dark for the reader as well as for the characters. She showed us through her characters perspective rather than told us their story. I always find this so fascinating when an author does this type of show correctly. There was mystery between the two character we as the reader didn't understand in book one that we do in book two. It left the door open for the unexpected and a very clever way for the author to keep the reader interested. Good job, Louise! That being said, the book is still very steamy. We, the readers, felt the sexy rolling off the pages, we felt the attraction of the characters, and in time felt their pain when they separated. By the end of book one of the Empire State series, I couldn't wait to start book two.
review 2: 3.5 StarsI was given an ARC book for an honest review, free of persuasion from the author or anyone else affiliated with this book. CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS; CONTAINS ADULT SITUATIONS AND CONTENTThis story has 2 different people's POV. These are my favorite type of books to read, simply because you get to see what is happening from 2 separate angles. Anna is visiting New York City from London with her best friend Leah. Anna just had a bad break up and needed a "holiday." (I call it a vacation lol… different cultures.) Leah thinks Anna needs to just "have sex" with no strings attached for once. She goes along with her friend's idea and hooks up with a guy at a local club. Ethan lives and works in New York City and goes to the club to have one night stands. He has rules that he lives by so that no one ever sees who he really is. After Anna meets Ethan, she decides to make her own rules for their "relationship" during the week she is visiting. As I always say: why make rules when you can always break them?? It was only supposed to be one night, then one week. Do Anna and Ethan let their hearts takeover during her one week in New York?I liked this book. I can honestly say I did not love this book. I would have liked to see some more substance besides sex on every other page. I also think that an author can sell a book without a lot of curse words to fill up a book. I liked the story behind the sex and language and would like to see more background to Anna and Ethan, and maybe a little more substance or description in some places. Ms. Bay's writing style is great, and that is the reason behind 3.5 and not lower stars. There is a bit of a cliffy… you will need the next installment of the Empire State Series to see what happens with Ethan and Anna! less
