review 1: Complex, but intriguingly observed narrative keeps you page-turning through the lies, secrets, hopes, fears, dreams and motivations of the main characters. The love stuff is rather well done too . The ending had me crying and thinking ' Noooooooooooooo!'- but even though I wanted a different outcome, I thought this was a wonderful novel. There's also rather a lot about books and bookshops in it, which is always good !
review 2: One day, while sorting through her grandmother’s books, Roberta comes across a letter that seems to reveal a family secret. As she delves into her grandmother’s past, more and more mysteries need to be unravelled, and in a well-controlled dual-time narrative, her grandmother Dorothy’s past is told alongside Roberta’s own present-... moreday life. Both women are linked not only by family ties but also by their loneliness and desire to find love and connection. Dorothy lived on a farm during the war and the period is authentically and vividly evoked. She has two land girls billeted with her, and the meeting with these two girls and a Polish fighter pilot stationed nearby changes her life for ever. Meanwhile in the present Roberta works in a bookshop where she imagines other lives from the letters and photographs left by people in the second-hand books that the shop sells, and wonders what her own future will hold. In alternating chapters, the two stories interweave in a compelling story that is both engaging and moving. It’s a tale of resilience and regret, loneliness and loss, romantic and maternal love. Not great literature perhaps but a very enjoyable read. less
