review 1: Oh my. The nuanced verse (how'd this get translated anyhow?) that flows through complex chapters brings us glimpses of artistic brilliance and is like nothing I've ever experienced; I have comprehended a sense, not a whole, of the creative inspiration of which I have been unaware. Dark and melancholy, fatalistic and beautiful, Seibo There Below seems to be a book that shouldn't be possible to author. I don't pretend to have understood much of the book's references to oriental, Greek and other cultural, geographical and religious themes, events, and motifs (Lazlo, how do you know all these things?), and there is an awful lot to try and understand and fathom; but truthfully, even without full understanding one gets swept up in the current and delivered to a new place of und... moreerstanding and appreciation.
review 2: This one requires lots of patience. It is many short stories, all of which revolve around Art (with a capital A) bringing moments of the sublime for one transient moment before we all start mucking around in the mud per usual and die (with a lowercase d). If you are a fan of Kraznahorkai, it's interesting to see him find these moments of beauty, since most of the work I've read by him is so relentlessly hopeless and full of Hungarian peasants and pitchforks. But fear not, supporters of Melancholy of the Resistance, he still spends plenty of time on, er, time and how we are all, on a long enough timeline, doomed. But at least we can enjoy a sculpture or two as we head for our respective eternities..... less

I read a excerpt from this wonderful book in Harper's August 2013 issue. I really really liked it.

The prose of this book is liquid. Something to become immersed in, potentially lethal.
