review 1: A little woodpecker explores the neighborhood and pecks a variety of objects in a nearby house. Each time the bird pecks, he leaves a small die-cut hole on each object. Children will enjoy the little holes in each object and could practice a pecking motion with the woodpecker. At the end, the tired woodpecker goes home and falls asleep with his father. The book would provide an opportunity for children to practice vocabulary words about a variety of household objects.
review 2: This is a picture book created by Lucy Cousins, whose story follows the eager young woodpecker, along-side his father. This is a simplistic story that teaches that everything that we want to do well takes practice (such as pecking). The words were short, simple and rhymed at times, which
... more made the flow of the each page smooth. What really clever about this book is the how the woodpecker shapes the page's design. With each page (including the cover) there are tiny woodpecker holes, which usually preview the next page. It makes the reader guess as to what's going to happen next, without an adult prompting any questions. Great for those that are learning to count, as it uses the motif of repetitive words. less
