review 1: I’ve read a number of Sepúlved's books in English translation and there is something about his stuff that grabs me, and I am not quite sure why.Anyway I was checking out reviews of him on Goodreads and found the Italian version of this book, which sent me on a search for an English translation ,which I could not find even though t is available in German, Italian and Portuguese but not English.Soooo, I decided to get a Spanish version just to check it out, of course my Spanish language ability is, well not so good. Any way I eventually found I could get an ebook version from Barnes and Noble (Strange that amazon didn’t have it) so I bought that at a very reasonable price and started reading it on my tablet. Interestingly, this version is for German speakers reading Spa... morenish, so the footnotes are full of Spanish word definitions in German (my High School German from 40 years ago didn’t help much).I dig in and fortunately the nook app allows me to highlight a word and then search Google, and also fortunately for me it was a pretty short book.But after all that preface, I have to say, I LOVED it! Even with my Spanish Language disability. Well worth all the trouble and now I want to read more books like this in Spanish. Of course the problem is there probably not a lot of writers out there like Sepúlveda. The writing even though foreign to me was clear and somehow, often even if I didn’t know the word I got a sense of what was going on. And to restate, what I understood...I LOVED.A Man a Cat and a Mouse, and it equals a really heartwarming story. I usually don’t go in for heartwarming stuff but Sepúlveda somehow makes it all seem just right. Even through the fog of my poor translation I felt a real connection to all of them. The vision of the mouse holding onto the blind cat has they jump from roof to roof is just great.Plus it makes you almost want to cry in happiness to read such phrases like the recurring refrain of “los amigos de verdad” Los amigos de verdad comparten los sueños y las esperanzasLos amigos de verdad también comparten las pequenas cosas que alegran la vidaY los dos fueron felices, porque sabían que los amigos de verdad comparten lo mejor que tienen.I also really like the illustrations for the this version, by Simona Mulazzani
review 2: Well, I am waaay out of the book's target. Infact, it was actually my grandma's birthday present for my little cousin.But since I adore "Storia di una gabbianella e del gatto che le insegnò a volare"... I wanted to read this one too.It's the story of how a blind cat befriends a mouse and how the mouse becomes the cat's eyes, allowing him to see through his words.Differently from the first one, this is pretty much a short story, while the other is a full -yet short- novel.The theme is pretty much the same: friendship -between different people/animals I'd say- and how friends help eachothers and stand for eachothers.It's really lovely... but it would have been better if it was longer, like "Storia di una gabbianella" less
