review 1: Frankie Joe has an inner strength and goodness that overcomes it all. What on the surface seems like a typical broken family story morphs into a touching picture of a kid making sense of the mistakes the grownups around him have made. No one is perfect here, the teachers, long-lost dad, the bratty brother, but the heart...oh the heart...in this imperfect story will make you fall in love with this book. There's no shortage of real compassion here and it shows. Five+ stars...a true gem.
review 2: An enjoyable read, although it is too pat with perfect scenarios for older kids to believe. Real life doesn't work out so neatly. I liked the quote from Frankie Joe to Matt as they were finally building a bond “I’m not sure being all you can be always means bein... moreg number one, Matt.” This is truly something kids need to understand. I think kids in grades 3-5 will love this story. Recommend. less
