review 1: I'm going to find it hard to review this book, because everything in it was so diverse and different. I've never read anything quite like Davis's writing- her ability to make me laugh in a two sentence story, break my heart with misplaced punctuation and make me question the whole purpose of writing with one paragraph. This one's going to fester for a while. I can definitely see her being a marmite writer though- I personally loved it.
review 2: From the very start, Lydia Davis challenges the very definition of a short story. There's little in the way of exposition, named characters, setting, and perhaps even plot when it comes to her style, and her often brief pieces seem - at times - more like observations cleverly disguised as fiction. The result produces brief snippets of insight into the human condition, from being a daughter to being a lover to being a loner and so on. Her stories are unexpected and utterly engrossing, pieces that challenge the traditional notion of "short story" by turning the form on its head. less

Extremely short stories, they take a little getting used to, very intense.
