review 1: Lynn Austin is a favourite author of mine. I certainly could not pass this book up when I noticed it was a kindle freebie for the day. :)This book is about three sisters' journey from Sweden to America. There was nothing left for them in Sweden but sad memories and insufferable relatives - in particular, an uncle that preyed on their grief. Elin Carlson, as the eldest sister, decided to take hold of the situation and help her sisters and herself to start over in the "land of dreams". Of course, nothing ever happens as we wish them to. As the novel progressed, the girls questioned whether they should have remained in Sweden after all. Hardships followed. It seemed that they were bound for nothing but heartache. The book had a slow start, and it took me a while to get into th... moree story, but once I did, I couldn't put it down. It really was a sweet story. About the caring relationship between sisters, about finding peace in the midst of life's storms. I liked how the story was told through each sister's point of view. It gives the reader a better chance at getting to know the characters. Getting inside their head. And it's ever so much clearer to see how the characters grew and matured. I particularly enjoyed seeing how Sofia changed from a fearful little girl into a young woman who seized the day with boldness. I especially loved the scenes with Ludwig; Neither of them could understand the other, but they managed to hold conversations through bible passages. (They sure knew their Bible, haha). It was unique. Charming. Elin learned to let go of the urge to fix everything. Kirsten learned to let go of bitterness and feel love again. And at the end, they all found exactly what they needed in this new life. A second chance.
review 2: I absolutely love all of the books by Lynn Austin that I have read. This is my 4th, and I intend to read them all. This author doesn't seem to stick to one subject, but in all 4 of her books that i've read she delves deep into her character's inner conflicts. Her people are so real that I feel that I know them personally. She isnt' afraid to attack important social issues, such as slavery, incest, etc. Fortunately for me, my community's public library has many of her books, but I have a feeling that the time will come when I will have to purchase books that they don't have. less

Enjoyable, clean. An almost too-happy ending, but still liked it.
