review 1: I didn't realize that this book is considered "Christian Fiction" when I started it. While it is most definitely heavy on the "God stuff", it's also an excellent read about the Reconstruction era after the Civil War. The story is told through the eyes of 3 woman; a mother, her daughter, and a former slave. I found the former slaves viewpoint the most interesting. I could feel her fear and uncertainty. The ending was a little too sweet and fair to believe, but overall a great book.
review 2: Good storytelling (as expected from Lynn Austin). Gives a glimpse into the period of time immediately following the Civil War that helps (in a small way) to understand how it was that the South remained so violently racially divided for so long. Something that my north
... moreern upbringing never informed me of in any meaningful way.The ending was a bit unbelievable and resolves too quickly, IMO. But suspending my contemporary sensibilities about all of that, I could see in the ending the perfect object lesson for redemption - which, ultimately, is at the heart of the Christian faith - and Lynn Austin's stories. Overall good story and I'm glad I read it. less
