review 1: This story about 10 year old Hastin took me on a journey to a place and experience I will never have. Yet the struggles and the internal wrestling are more familiar. I will never be the caretaker of an elephant or live in India, but I understand love, sacrafice, and loss. Although this young man's experiences are a lot to bear, he possibly is a bit too insightful for his age. Yet I love this quote near the end: "...the remembering will hit me with a pain that drops me to the ground. But I will stand up again. The sadness will be woven with a happiness that makes it worth feeling, and I will not run from it."
review 2: Story of ten-year-old Hastin who lives in a village in northern India. His sister falls ill and his mother has to borrow money to pay for h... moreer hospitalization. In return Hastin goes to live and work with a man who wants to get a circus started in the faraway jungle. Hastin's job will be elephant keeper, caring for a young elephant that they have captured in the jungle. Hastin names the elephant Nandita and she becomes his best friend. The adventure turns into wondering whether he and Nanita can survive long enough to escape. I couldn't wait to see what happened at the end, I really enjoyed the story. less
