review 1: Reading this book left me chilled with what might have happened and mixed up about how I felt about the book. Sphinx and Cadence are the offspring of women who have kept up with each other since their friendship as children. So close are they that they promised that their children would get married when they were older. Although it was a childish fantasy, both women hoped that it might happen. Sphinx tells the story of how those plans go wrong. Cadence is an attractive, talented young man, but he is also quite troubled and finds it impossible to feel anything. Even as a child, he deliberately crushed a butterfly and cut Sphinx across the face. It was clear early on that something is terribly wrong, and even though Sphinx feels sorry for him now that he's dying of cancer, s... morehe also is drawn, almost like a moth to a flame, to him and compelled to do his bidding. Since there is no cure for his illness, Cadence wants Sphinx to die alongside him. There were many points in the narrative during which I worried that she would do just that, and really, I don't know how she managed to summon the courage to resist him. Parts of the book are simply beautiful, but it was hard for me to get past my dislike of Cadence. When Sphinx brings to him the budgie that barely escaped his grasp earlier in the book, I simply threw my hands up in disgust since I knew what was coming. While Cadence would maintain that her experiences with him changed her forever, I don't know that that's necessarily a good thing. I also felt so frustrated that Cadence's mother failed to realize just how dangerous he was.
review 2: I'm really not understanding why so many people have given this a one star rating. Some cited that Cadence was too textbook SEMI SPOILER sociopath. Well...as do most things being a sociopath comes with signs and symptoms...kind of have to have all or half to be diagnosed... so yeah... he kind of would have to be textbook...Some hated Sphinx and her decisions. While I find her weak in the area of being a pushover she often explains herself in the book. She doesn't want to disappoint her mother and her old best friend is dying and since Sphinx has emotions she feels bad even if the dudes a dick. That's understandable as well.I loved this book and finished it in one setting. Nothing like the typical YA love triangles and forgotten plots. It is different and while a strange topic it's refreshing to read after everything else. Side note this was written on a phone so my spoiler stuff is written before hand instead of tagged or highlighted. Sorry! less
