review 1: This book focuses on Ysabelle and Sebastian, beginning all the back to when they were young kids even though they hadn't met each other until adulthood. I liked getting to know them so early on because it laid down the foundation of who they were and where they were from when it came to their view of the world. They have lived very different lives from each other - Ysabelle grew up fending for herself and without the love of a parent or close friend while Sebastian was born into privilege and focused on the perks of being a kid with close friends. Sebastian's closest friends were Julia and Olivia, who are sisters (Olivia comes into the picture later, she is adopted by Julia's family) and they had a very tight dynamic. All throughout Sebastian's life, he did whatever he cou... moreld to be a good guy or to put Julia's happiness first and foremost. This was to the detriment of his relationship with Olivia because they shared something deep and special but it could never be if Julia was in the picture or she would get hurt. The fact that Sebastian opted to put his and Olivia's desires aside for Julia really floored me. On the one hand, that was very unselfish of him, but on the other hand, he and Olivia had to suffer for it while Julia continued on. I didn't dislike Julia, but I didn't love her. It was obvious that what he shared with her didn't compare to what he shared with Olivia. And then one day Olivia is no more, sending Sebastian into a tailspin of self-destruction but then awakens with an epiphany that he needs Julia in his life. From there, Sebastian does a great job of being a husband and father. Julia actually came off whiny as time went on. Ysabelle, on the other hand, starts working at age 16 and has her first friend ever, Devon. My heart really broke for Ysa's struggles, but she never looked at it that way, she was strong to the core and always moved forward. Once she becomes a VIP, Ysa is unstoppable - having never been wanted in her early life, now she is wanted all of the time by various men even though it's for a price and it's temporary and it's most certainly not real in terms of feelings and a committed relationship. Ysa believes she doesn't want those things, that her power is in being desired but not returning it. Once Sebastian and Ysa meet, things change, they see things in the other and it takes their hearts places that their hearts have never been before. I was glad that Sebastian understood how wrong his situation was but I also liked that he felt the way he did toward Ysa. What I didn't like was the fact that he was in the same situation as before and that if history repeats itself, he would likely pick Julia again over his real true love. This story is about Sebastian fighting to be with the love of his life and about Ysa discovering the power of loving herself. The messages about love are plentiful and Ysa was my favorite character. She was so closed off from people but as she started to open up, she literally blossomed and seemed unstoppable. I also admired the close sisterhood she shared with her fellow VIPs, normally I expected cattiness, but that kind of drama was spared in this book. Madam might have seemed like a villian, but my perception was that she was a shrewd businesswoman who didn't tolerate messy feelings. I'm really interested in her story to see how she became who she is.
review 2: Loved this book!!!The writng and the story line were just what I like to read and once I started I couldnt put it down. It's told in dual POV between Ysabelle and Sebastian and it had me intrigued to see how their paths would finally cross given they were both from completely different sides of the track.Ysabelle was the daughter of a drug addicted prostitute who was hungry and neglected from the day she was born and Sebastian was the son of 2 doctors and was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. This was a slow burn and the author did a fantastic job in character development. By the time Ysa and Sebastian met we learnt all abouth their respective childhoods, education, loves and losses, pain and what led them to be where they were when they met. I love a story with the right level of angst and this was perfect. My favourite part was when Sebastian had to deliver a yacht and asked Ysabelle to accompany him for the 3 day journey. OMG It was so well written, I felt like I was experiencing all their emotions and turmoil right along there with them.Ysabelle was a very strong character, she was tough and had built a wall that no one could penetrate until Sebastian. Sebastian was very loyal to Julia. They had grown up together and he felt completely responsible for her happiness to the detriment of his own true feelings, happiness and to the detriment of the woman he loved.I could only see disaster and was sitting on the edge of my seat because I really didn't know how it was going to end any other way. Thank goodness Julia stepped up because given the type of person Sebastian was he would have believed he had to stay on that path and deserved to be miserable.I didn't want this book to end and hope we get more of this beautiful couple in book 3. Off to read book 2. less
