review 1: I love when I read a book and it shocks me to my core. I read a lot and when that happens I have to keep going. I can't put the book down. This book does that!! Trust me and you will not be disappointed. You will think that you are reading your typical New Adult romance about a guy and a girl--and the BAM it takes you in a whole other direction that you were not expecting. You can't help but want to root for Raya and Duke to have the perfect life in the sunset, but if course there is a girl in the way at the beginning. Melanie is the ideal girlfriend. She is beautiful, nice, fiesty,...everything a guy would want. She befriends Raya when she firsts moves to the school and forms a friendship that can't be broken. Even when she knows and can see that Duke and Raya are ... moremade for each other. While Duke has the perfect life (great family, friends, sports, good looks), Raya has just the opposite. She lives with her mom and her god aweful step-father that you want to punch in the nuts everytime he opens his mouth. She loves her mother with all of her heart and will do anything to get her away from the devil himself.Just when Raya and Duke think that things are going in the right direction, a tragic incident takes place and Raya leaves without a trace.I love that Duke has such a love for Raya that is continues even after she leaves. He has such a connection to her that he can feel in his bones that something is not right and he will do whatever it takes to get her back.I am telling you that you need to read this book. I will say that it would have been a 5 star read for me, but there were some detail that just didn't make sense to me (even though the story works) and I felt like there needed to be a little more at the end. Either way, I promise this is a book you are not going to forget and I pity the author that I read next because this book hangover may last a few days.
review 2: This book was intensely emotional, raw and downright dark and gritty. This was totally my kind of read. It started out kind of slow but I understand we had to get the whole back story and understand the dynamics of the friendships, so my advice when you hit this point, KEEP READING. The story line will change and it will feel like you got hit by a freaking freight train. I did not expect what happened to happen. I loved being caught by surprise. Raya is one tough cookie! She always fights for what she believes in throughout the whole book. Sometimes with deadly consequences. Her fighting spirit is what keeps her alive.Duke latches on emotionally to Raya from the very first moment they meet. Raya immediately falls in love with Duke. Can they be together at all?Tragedy strikes at the end of her senior year in high school and Raya high tails it out of town leaving Duke behind. He’s not having any of that and he looks for her. What will he find? Will it be too late to find the Raya he knew in high school?Ms. Street tells us one hell of a disturbing yet awesome story that you don't want to miss out on. But please only 18+ and be warned that it deals with rape, prostitution and abuse. I’ll be looking forward to reading more of this author.Complimentary copy provided by the author in exchange for an honest review. less
