review 1: Chaos reigns as the threat of imminent nuclear destruction hangs over the city of Mumbai. A physicist, Karun, goes missing and his wife and gay lover negotiate their way through ethnic and religious tensions as they search for him. Karun though is such a straight forward characters and in the backstory he always seems to be rebuffing their sexual advances and feelings of love that you wonder what the two characters, especially the dynamic Jaz, see in him, but his earnestness does eventually become endearing.
review 2: Totally entertaining! The setting in a Mumbai about to be destroyed by religious extremists is both far-fetched and uncannily familiar. There are scenes so over the top that they make you laugh out loud, and yet the poignancy of human love, fear,
... moreanger, and tolerance give the story a grounded center. I tend to like novels where the normal rules of society get suspended and the author can explore the possibilities of human relationships in extremis. The City of Devi is, finally, a story of relationships. A little bit Wizard of Oz, a little bit James Bond, a little bit Hunger Games, and a little bit Giovanni's Room, the novel provides an excellent romp. less

Very weird. Watch out for very descriptive male on male scenes!
