review 1: This book was a joy to read.I had not heard of Manu Joseph before, and I have to admit that the reason I purchased this book was in fact, because of it's beautiful cover, going on to prove (again, for me) that judging a book by it's cover isn't that bad of an idea. From the very start until the very end, this story had me hooked. I had to force myself to put the book down, and even when I did my mind was constantly going back to Unni Chacko and the mysteries that surround him. I love Manu Joseph's style of writing and was tempted more than once to highlight several paragraphs. It's set in Madras in the 1990's and the detailed descriptions took me back to all of the trips I've taken to Madras as a child. The suspense is maintained until the very end of the book. There were ... moremoments of deep sadness, anger and empathy, with just the right amount of philosophy. I don't want to spoil the story at all though, so I'll keep this short. I do, however, feel that there is more to this book, than which can be understood from reading it once. I will be going back to Ouseph Chacko and Unni Chacko and his search for the ultimate truth once again.
review 2: Lots of characters, and peculiarities associated with those characters. The book starts out interesting, but i felt that the plot was too intricate in the middle leading to the end of the story. There were interesting parts about the state of mind, and the polar personalities that exist, but overall i was just ok with the novel, not a fan. Maybe it was the mentality of people reflected in the book ( which is probably true), was something i couldn't accept and appreciate. less
