review 1: I had a hard time really getting into this book and I had to really push myself to finish it. maybe because I'm female or because I'm not from an upper-class New York family or because my father is still alive or... I don't know, but reading this felt like watching someone having a nervous breakdown and not being able to do anything to help. This book made me feel anxious every time I picked it up, which is why it took me a lot longer than usual to finish it.
review 2: I wanted to like this book. I really did. And although Roth is a good writer and I find him sympathetic, I found myself wondering WHY I was continuing to read this book. ... moreRoth was ambivalent about writing this sort of memoir - one that exposes and reveals his deepest family secrets. But, if one chooses to do so, one can't be timid or elusive about it. I felt like I learned more about his famous aunt, Anne Roiphe, than I did about his mother and father. Perhaps this was because he wasn't afraid of hurting her. Anyway, this was a slow read that I felt that I had to force myself to finish. And, at the end, there was no redemption, no growth or no real change. less

beautiful writing but too self-indulgent for me - i got about halfway through, maybe a little less.

Very good. I love an interesting family story which is told in 200 pgs. I enjoyed it very much.
