review 1: when i first heard of marcus samuelsson, he was cooking state dinner for the obamas and on top chef masters. watching him on tv, i thought he was arrogant and mean. in fact i never finished watching the season he ended up winning because of him. but reading this book made me come to respect the chef that he has become and the person behind who was edited on TV. this book is very well written and captivating to read. it was heartwarming to read of the love and acceptance of his swedish family and i really respect the determination and work ethic he held to make something of himself in a field that did not readily embrace him. one of my new favorite food memoirs for sure.
review 2: Wow! Why did I wait so long to read this book? It's an autobiography of a
... moreyoung chef who was born in Ethiopia, was adopted with his older sister by Swedish parents, and taught to cook by his grandmother. I listened to this book, which was read by Marcus himself. That definitely added to the experience, because you could feel his feelings as he read his own story. His drive to become a world-class chef, in a world where very few black people cook at top restaurants, is incredible. READ THIS ONE! less
