review 1: Judging a book by how engaged the reader is seems like a good method! This book had me totally captivated. War is devastating, but there are so many sides to it, and this novel hit on all of them. I loved the writing, the characters, the descriptions of the setting, and the theme. As a former teacher of writing, I appreciated the foreshadowing in the writing. I have never read anything else by Margaret Leroy, but will research her now.

I bought this book in the UK while on vacation. I almost didn't and after reading it I'm so glad I did. The book made me stop and think, what would I do in this situation? In these days of unrest in the Middle East, we could easily be put in this situation of war. How would I react with the enemy as a neighbor? What balance must you need to have to walk that thin line between enemy and friend? How do you decide? Who do you trust? What do you say/do to people who condemn you or do you join the bandwagon and condemn those who have done what you're about to do? How do you survive in a time of food shortages? How do you move out of your comfort zone to help your family survive? I like a book that makes me think and has a nice romance story in it too!
