review 1: This is a fascinating book, not just about sturdy entertainer Lyle Talbot, but sort of a history of entertainment in the 20th century, from traveling carnivals and vaudeville to stage. film, radio and television (yes, Talbot was part of it all). Written with obvious love but not blinders, Ms. Talbot does a superb job of recreating what it must have been like to be a journeyman performer in the last century.
review 2: A fascinating look back at American entertainment through the 20th century, via the life of Lyle Talbot, a man who started out as a carny in the Midwest, rose to stardom in Hollywood B movies with Humphrey Bogart and Carole Lombard, and ended up on "Ozzie and Harriet" for 14 years.Written by his daughter, it's best when it focuses on his own life a
... morend story...it gets overlong when she veers into the history of the Hollywood Production Code, for instance. less
