review 1: Lila is a newly-divorced New York business woman who's feeling a little lonely. She meets David, a plant seller that introduces her to a plant - and the world that follows - that will change her life. A chance encounter at a Laundromat ends up landing Lila in the middle of the Yucatan searching for the nine plants of desire to pay debt and she ends up learning much more than she bargained for. This was an interesting read. Lila is easy to identify with; she is insecure, lonely, and jumps before thinking at the first chance to change that. The book has some very bizarre and strange moments but if you just keep with it, some of them start to make sense.
review 2: This dreamlike novel with a botanical theme made me want more exotic houseplants in my life: I ran out
... more and bought a colourful Croton and a spiky Sansevieria (the tag says "Wants Minimal Attention." Good thing.). The jacket description failed to warn me about the heavy dose of magic realism in the tale (which, in the end, made me want to reread Carlos Castaneda's Teachings of Don Jun again) but after I got over being annoyed about that, I stuck with the story because Berwin kept it real enough that I could still follow the twisting path of an very strange and interesting plot. less
