review 1: If I had to pick one word to describe this book it wouldn't be "bad". It would be "unsatisfying". This was my fist horror novel, and it wasn't particularly scary. The ending which explained things with "Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane." was unsatisfying because even though that is a unique conclusion to come too, it wasn't handled well, mainly because neither explanation was explored very deeply. The characters were bland and somewhat unbelievable and for a large portion of time, unlikable. Most the people around Leena can be characterized in sentence descriptions and no deeper. Her friends, Abby & Viv who she was supposed to have known forever, were rude and bitchy and not very supportive for people who were supposed to be her best friends. Nor were they very impressive charac... moreters. Celeste was such a nonsensical entity for most of the book that her drama is hard to care about and her character by the end of the book, while much more likable made her former personality seem ridiculous. David didn't make much of an impression until he & Leena fight during the climax and they exchange some nasty if not particularly clever insults. I think one of the main problems with the book may have been Leena herself. She's bland. She's the perfect girl with a developing drug problem (When you start stealing for your habit is when you know you have a problem.) Her struggle in the closet climax is somewhat unearned for a character who didn't ever show that much personality, let alone strength. The climax too was a problem. It was basically a buildup to open a closet door. And if were going to have a climax, go all out! Don't just have the heroine fight with whispered words of negativity in her head, do something! This book reminded me of a much, much better book with some similar elements ("Maybe mundane, maybe magic", a haunted house and people losing themselves.) Toni Morrison's Beloved, which I would happily point to every time someone asked me if they should read this one or not.
review 2: I'm not really sure what to make of this book. It's very slow, which is sort of hard to do for a book that's only 266 pages (on my nook). None of it was particularly exciting or memorable. I sort of liked it? It wasn't terrible? But it wasn't even creepy. I guess it was trying to be a realistic ghost story, instead of everyone leaping to conclusions? But who wants to read about that? The main character was kind of dumb. I didn't actively dislike this book, but I did start skimming about halfway through, and then about 3/4 of the way through I realized that I wasn't going to go back and fully read it, because I was getting the main idea and that's all that mattered. Never a good sign. Overall, I guess it was just kind of a letdown? Yeah. less
