review 1: Nelson's semi-autobiographical reveal life as the African-American child growing up in the 1950s. The poems take place between age 4 and 13 for the teacher, and as the narrator matures, her understanding of the events taking place in the world around her grows, as well. The collection is filled with historical allusions that suggest further reading for younger readers who may not be familiar with the events. I was pleasantly surprised when the speaker's family's travels land her at Clinton-Sherman AFB in western Oklahoma, where I grew up. This book is a quick read that is rich and complex enough for multiple reads.
review 2: Stunning autobiographical series of 50 unrhymed sonnets by Marilyn Nelson that tell the story of her 1950s childhood as the daughter of Af
... morerican-American military officer. Each poem provides a snapshot of her life; some are funny, some are poignant; all show a moment of insight or growth. I read it in one sitting and then promptly started to read it over again. Because Nelson was a military brat, this slim volume is literally set all over the country, and as such it is really a remarkably American story. And for poetry lovers, this book is a real delight, as Nelson is a formidable wordsmith. less
