review 1: As a departure to my normal recreational reading, I loved this book. The author does an outstanding job of threading individual character, history, and the story of the Northfield Raid. I enjoy history but this book is really more "Americana" in that it gives the reader a true sense of what life was like in the midwest in the mid to late 1800s. It doesn't glamorize the Youngers or the James' but it does humanize them to a level that makes it all-the-more interesting.
review 2: I read this book over the Thanksgiving holiday. I was looking forward to drinking beer, eating, taking naps and reading a great book. The beer, food and naps were great. The book was excellent. Shot All to Hell was the perfect selection. It was better than any novel or movie of that time
... morein history. I believe Mr. Gardner is time traveler as I feel that he was there and, after reading this book, so was I. less
