review 1: Not as touching for me as the Girl and the Bicycle. And I couldn't help thinking that he could just have asked a taller person to use the ladder.... But it's still cute to see the boy go through ideas, and then waiting through his final idea (which was funny and also sad). The ending was sweet though. The kids would follow this much better in storytime, and probably get a laugh from it. Worth trying.
review 2: The Boy and the Airplane is a heartwarming wordless story about a boy and his devotion towards his toy airplane. The story starts from the moment the boy takes his airplane out of the box. The young boy is outside playing with his airplane when he accidentally throws it too high and it lands on the roof. He tries a number of rescue attempts trying to r
... moreetrieve his prized possession, but nothing helps. He plops down against a tree, the look on his face showing utter sadness. It is then that he comes up with a marvelous idea. He plants a tree next to the house knowing one day it will grow tall enough for him to climb it. Until then he waits, and waits for years. With each turn of the page the boy becomes older insinuating the number of years he has been waiting. The young boy, now bald and bearded, is finally able to climb the tree to reclaim his airplane. Mark Pett’s illustrations have a way of putting words into the readers mind without having any words present. The sepia toned, taupe, grey and green illustrations gives the story a warm, soft, mellow vibe. Pett’s use of lines, both curved and straight, represent motion implying that the characters in the book are moving, bringing the pictures to life. less
