review 1: There is nothing wrong with Watson's writing. An emotional story, told in a memoir style that, Throughout, made me reminisce about my childhood and remember relationships past and present, which I quite enjoyed.I should imagine he saw or read something that piqued his interest in this disturbing idea, where the inbuilt mechanism that prevents it from happening, breaks down and therefore decided, it was a tale worth telling. That's as maybe, but unfortunately I did not feel empathy towards any of the characters, especially Dominic. He was a poor son, crap brother and a dreadful father who slightly redeemed himself in the final chapter. A dithering, addictive, self indulgent hypocrite. Obviously he's not going to be a superhero but I should want to sympathise with him in some... more way. Not despise him.
review 2: Another spur of the moment purchase from the Amazon Deal of the Day. I was aware of Mark Watson as a stand-up comedian but hadn't realised he was also a writer of novels with a decent reputation. This is a terrific book and I enjoyed it immensely. Whilst it was mainly light hearted, it also dealt with some fairly complex issues in a sensitive fashion. I did dock a star because there seemed to be a few continuity issues in the book (or whatever the literary equivalent is). They were all pretty minor though and didn't spoil my enjoyment too much. less

3.5 if I could, I wasn't expecting such a dark twist. Great characters and a good read.

Horrible/likeable characters - squirmy secret - really enjoyed it.

Excellent, as good as Eleven. A writer at the top of his game.
