review 1: When it comes to bringing social taboos to the masses, this book does a pretty good job – very readable, full of interesting characters...but some readers might find themselves put off by the way the plot unfolds. It’s hard to say more without leaving spoilers - I guess you just have to try it and see. I thought it was a pretty good story – though I often wished the central characters were more likeable. The narrator’s sister in particular I found rather bossy and bumptious. On the other hand, the terminally smug Shillingworth family were brilliantly portrayed and a pleasure to hate throughout.
review 2: Okay. You want to know something? It's a bit of a cliche to admit to this sort of thing but...Mark Watson is one of my heroes. Hilarious comic, br
... moreilliant author and all round nice fellow. I don't find myself being a 'big fan' of many things (The Who, Norwich City and John Lennon being exceptions) but I certainly am of Watson.I brought the Knot on release day, as you'd naturally expect from a 'big fan', and read the entire book in about three or four days. You can read into that as much as you want but trust me if I can read something that quick then it must be pretty good. If you're looking for a hilarious comic romp though, you're better off looking elsewhere. There are funny bits in the book, but it's not tears-down-your-face funny. Without giving anything away, there is a turn towards something very dark towards the end and something that I found a bit jarring as the novel seems to jump this on you without much prior warning (or as much prior warning as you'd expect - if you thought that the 'big thing' in Eleven was pretty dark, you haven't seen anything yet).Watson is an ace 1st person writer, and this really shines throughout. Little observances and nuances are brilliantly played out and makes for a thunderous read. (Thunderous? Does that really make sense? Yeah, alright I'll go with it). less

So much for that underwhelming experience.
