review 1: I'm not sure why I waited so long to read this. Maybe I resisted because I questioned whether there's a maximum age limit to teen fiction. But I figured a lazy post-turkey-ingestion Thanksgiving afternoon was the perfect time to read this If I intended to read it at all. The bottom line is, regardless of your age when you read it, it's a delightful way to start a holiday-books-reading season. There are a myriad of reasons why you can read and like this book. The main character, Holly Dayton, is someone you'll pull for throughout the book. She's a decent girl who loves her aging grandpa and understands the strictures of mortality in a vivid way. That means she's eager to share with him whatever of their lives together remain. Bates writes this character so well that y... moreou'll even immediately love her bubbly best friend, Jen.This book gets off to a rousing start indeed. Holly and Jen, a couple of high-school seniors, figure they're a little short of money. That's probably pretty common for lots of senior girls in lots of towns and cities across the nation, but when you live in Los Angeles, and when your much-beloved grandpa wants you to take a Christmas cruise to celebrate his birthday, and when your satanic twin cousins will also be on that cruise with their calorie-counting witch of a mother, and when you don't have anything to wear during the cruise, you'll do almost anything for money. That's what brought Holly and Jen to a local mall where they had signed on to be Santa's helpers. But Santa is a lecherous old drunk who can't keep his hands off Holly. Rightfully unwilling to stoically deal with Santa's wandering hands, Holly essentially punches him out, creating a rather funny domino effect that cuts short her budding elf career and ensures she doesn't have money to buy good clothes.Things get worse once the ship has left port and the sea sickness gets to Holly. On a particularly bad night when the satanic sisters have unceremoniously tossed Holly out of their shared room, she rushes into the open bathroom of an open suite and vomits everything she had eaten for weeks. The suite may have been open, but it was far from empty. It's occupant is a young drummer for ReadySet, the hottest band in the nation. Holly and the drummer, Dominic, meet in what is one of the most well constructed and funniest introduction scenarios you'll read anywhere.Holly's escape from the room is made far more difficult by a gaggle of screaming tween girls in front of the door who have learned that Dominic is on the ship. Holly looks awful. In fact, Dominic refers to her throughout the book as "the mess," and on that first day, she is. Her puffy eyes and disheveled appearance is largely his fault, but the gossip rags are already rushing to publication with stories about Dominic's new abusive relationship with a mystery girl. What was to have been a relaxing time for Dominic on the cruise turns out to be a time of conniving and scheming to manipulate the press into believing that Holly is his new girlfriend, and that they are very much in love. There's some profanity here, but I was impressed by the fact that Marni Bates didn't feel the need to turn Holly into a groupie who would hop in the sack with anything that moved. There are no descriptions of sex here. There's a little kiss and cuddle action, but Bates writes well enough that she doesn't have to resort to cliché or threadbare plots. The bottom line is, this is a super-short quick read that will serve as a delightful start to a holiday reading month. But if you're yearning for Christmas, and it's hot July, you can read this in the summer heat and still have a great time with it.
review 2: Well this isn't exactly a cute little holiday book like the cover suggests. Very deceptive and mean, the book is still good but I was looking for a cute little wintery christmas romance since it's Christmas! And I've developed a tradition of reading at least one a year. So disappointing that I thought I had it covered and then, not so much.Regardless of my disappointment of the deceptive cover/title. This book was cute and told from both perspectives which made things extra interesting to hear what they both thought of each other. Fun times. Do read if you're in the mood for a fluffy book, but not if you want a holiday book. This only Christmasy part of this is at the very very beginning, then it's done after the first chapter. less
