I had the great privilege of attending Love Lies Bleeding yesterday evening. I love the ballet and I have been wanting to see this one for awhile. The multimedia. Ballet was and ode to Elton John, featuring 14 of his songs.
I was so excited when the Royal Winnipeg Ballet announced that the Alberta Ballet would be bringing this show to us. I had read that Elton John approached the Alberta Ballet himself and encouraged them to focus on both the good and bad elements of his success. The show did not shy away from themes of addiction and repression. It was passionate, provocative, and just overall stunning. The costumes were vibrant, the emotion was raw. And importantly, it offered a refreshing break from the heteronormativity often seen at the ballet.
